Power over Ethernet for Smaller Spaces

By Harry Aller, Innovative Lighting President

In a recent article titled “There Are No AC Outlets on Spaceships,” Joel Lorentzen makes a compelling observation about modern power infrastructure: “The people who design spaceships are the best and brightest technical minds on the planet…They know that collecting, storing, and deploying electrical energy to useful work is most efficient in the DC realm.” The point is that this insight extends far beyond spacecraft design – it’s increasingly relevant to how we should approach power distribution in our everyday spaces.

GENSIYS PoE Lighting for small spaces

While Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology often makes the news in large commercial installations, its true potential lies in smaller spaces. Consider this: 95% of commercial buildings in the United States are 50,000 square feet or less. Add to that the thousands of new homes built each year using electrical infrastructure over a century old in design, and we begin to see an opportunity for significant change.

Rethinking Power Distribution for Modern Needs

Due to advances in energy efficiency, today’s devices predominantly operate on DC power. Our phones, laptops, LED lights, and smart devices all require DC power to function. Yet we continue to build our distribution systems and physical spaces with AC infrastructure, requiring extra power conversions that, as Lorentzen emphasizes, create unnecessary waste and inefficiency.

In smaller spaces, this inefficiency is especially noticeable. Take LED lighting as an example. Traditional AC-powered LED bulbs require built-in conversion electronics that generate heat and reduce longevity. A PoE-based approach eliminates these conversion points, delivering DC power directly to simplified, more reliable fixtures with extended longevity.

The Right Fit for Your Space

How do you know if PoE is right for your space? Consider these questions:

  • Do you want automated lighting that responds to your presence?
  • Are you interested in scene control and dimming capabilities?
  • Would you benefit from lighting that automatically adjusts throughout the day to support your circadian rhythm?
  • Do you value local control over your systems without relying on third-party cloud services?
  • Are you comfortable with IT networking concepts?

If you answered yes to several of these questions, particularly regarding automated control and customization, PoE might be your ideal solution. For those with IT backgrounds, software development experience, or general technical skillsets, PoE provides a familiar framework for managing your space’s infrastructure.

How Does This Work in the Real World?

Consider the Midwest homeowner finishing their basement. Traditional electrical work might seem daunting, but PoE offers a more approachable solution for a moderately tech-savvy DIYer. Or think about the inconvenience of arriving home with your hands full of groceries, unable to reach for a light switch in a dark hallway. With PoE-powered automated lighting, your space can recognize your presence and respond accordingly, no hands required.

Since the concept of using PoE for powering and controlling devices came on the scene nearly two decades ago, we’ve seen PoE succeed in countless smaller installations. From home offices to retail spaces, the technology has proven itself especially valuable in environments under 50,000 square feet. The key to this success? Understanding that it’s not about implementing technology for technology’s sake – it’s about matching the right solution to your daily needs and comfort level.

Looking Forward

Like the spaceship designers Lorentzen references, we need to think practically about power distribution in our spaces. While PoE might not be the answer for every situation (if you just want simple on/off lighting control, traditional solutions work fine), it offers significant benefits for those seeking more from their spaces.

The technology exists today to create safer, more efficient, and more responsive environments. Whether you’re planning a new build, renovating an existing space, or simply exploring options for better control over your environment, consider challenging the norm. After all, if it’s good enough for spacecraft, perhaps it’s worth considering for your next project too.

Further Reading

Want to learn more about whether PoE might be right for your space? Consider these key questions:

  1. What level of control do you want over your environment?
  2. How comfortable are you with networking technology?
  3. Are you planning to integrate automation features?
  4. Do you value local control over cloud-based solutions?
  5. Are you looking to future-proof your space’s infrastructure?

Your answers to these questions can help guide you toward the most appropriate solution for your needs.

EcoBrite: 20 Years of Leading Refrigerated Case Lighting

By Shawn Liddell, Innovative Lighting

For 20 years, EcoBrite has been the quiet hero illuminating the aisles of grocery stores, convenience chains, and big-box retailers across North America. Launched in 2004 by Innovative Lighting, EcoBrite was one of the first LED alternatives to fluorescent lighting for refrigerated cases. Since then, it has not only survived but thrived, delivering superior performance, energy efficiency, and longevity that few competitors can match. Today, EcoBrite marks two decades of innovation and excellence in refrigerated case lighting, with plans to be around for decades to come.

A Legacy of Innovation in Refrigeration Lighting

EcoBrite was developed at a time when fluorescent lighting dominated refrigerated cases in grocery stores. As LEDs were introduced in other use cases, the team at Innovative Lighting, saw an opportunity to bring the more efficient and long-lasting LEDs into case lighting to revolutionize refrigerated lighting. This vision led to the development of EcoBrite, and it didn’t take long for the industry to recognize the product’s value.

The LED technology behind EcoBrite provided a more energy-efficient, longer-lasting solution compared to traditional fluorescent tubes. What truly set EcoBrite apart, however, was its patented Precision Optical Performance (POP) technology, which allows light to bend and diffuse across the entire case.

Because light bars are placed vertically between doors, light from a normal LED is dim by the time it reaches the middle of a shelf where most products are. While other companies rely on adding more LED chips to improve brightness, Innovative’s patented solution achieves optimal lighting without the need for extra chips. That’s why the POP technology is so important – this innovation ensures that products are uniformly illuminated, providing a better visual experience for shoppers.

EcoBrite Stands the Test of Time

One of the hallmarks of EcoBrite’s success is its durability. The first installations from 20 years ago are still operational today, outlasting many of its competitors’ products. For grocery chains, this translates into significant cost savings—not just in terms of energy efficiency, but also in maintenance and replacements.

The shift from fluorescent lighting to LED is a major milestone in grocery and retail environments. LEDs, like those used in EcoBrite, consume less energy, generate less heat, and last much longer than their fluorescent counterparts. This means store owners don’t have to worry about frequent bulb changes or the energy costs that come with running inefficient lighting. It’s not just about cost savings either; EcoBrite’s superior color rendering index (CRI) ensures that products, from fresh produce to packaged goods, are displayed in their best light, literally.

EcoBrite has been trusted by some of the biggest names in retail. Even after experimenting with cheaper alternatives, clients always return to EcoBrite because its performance is unmatched.

Expanding Applications Beyond Refrigeration

While EcoBrite was initially designed for refrigerated cases, it has evolved into a versatile lighting solution for a variety of applications. Beyond grocery store coolers, you’ll find EcoBrite in floral cases, deli displays, and even non-refrigeration areas like hot buffets. Its customizable, retrofit-friendly design allows it to easily fit into any existing case or cooler, whether it’s replacing old fluorescent fixtures or being installed in new systems.

In addition to its white, fixed lighting options, EcoBrite also offers RGB and color-tuning technology, giving businesses the ability to customize lighting for special occasions. For example, a floral display could feature vibrant pink or red lighting during Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day, while standard white lighting remains the go-to for everyday use. This versatility has expanded EcoBrite’s reach beyond refrigerated cases into more creative and decorative lighting applications.

Grown in Iowa

And EcoBrite isn’t just about cutting-edge technology—it’s proudly “Grown in Iowa,” reflecting 20 years of local craftsmanship and dedication to quality. Every component, from the aluminum rails sourced from Albia, Iowa, to the boards assembled in Story City, reflects the dedication to local craftsmanship and quality. Whether lighting a grocery store cooler in Des Moines or a buffet station in New York, EcoBrite is a symbol of reliability and the best of Iowa manufacturing during a time when many companies continue to outsource their manufacturing overseas. It is  because Ecobrite is a high-quality, American-made product that it continues to lead the market.

Looking Ahead: The Future of EcoBrite

After 20 years, EcoBrite is far from resting on its laurels. As technology evolves, so does the product. EcoBrite continues to improve in terms of energy efficiency, brightness, and adaptability, ensuring that it remains the top choice for refrigerated case lighting in the years to come.

EcoBrite products will be on display at the upcoming ISE Expo, where a wide audience of electrical contractors and industry professionals can see this technology in action. Reach out to Shawn Liddell to schedule a personalized viewing session and reserve a custom gift in advance at sliddell@innovativelight.com

Conclusion

As Innovative Lighting marks 20 years of EcoBrite, the pursuit of reliability, energy efficiency, and versatility continues. Whether a company is looking to retrofit an existing refrigerated case or install lighting in a new system, EcoBrite is the trusted choice. With its roots firmly planted in Iowa and a reputation for excellence, EcoBrite is ready to continue leading the way in refrigerated case lighting for years to come.

Revolutionize Your Boating Experience with Innovative Lighting's New NAV-Docking Lights

By Harry Aller, Innovative Lighting

Boating safety is paramount, especially when navigating in low-visibility conditions. Proper lighting plays a crucial role in ensuring that vessels are seen and can safely dock in all weather and light conditions. Recognizing this need, Innovative Lighting launched its groundbreaking new product – the NAV-Docking Light. This light not only serves as a navigational signal but also provides docking assistance, merging two essential functions into one compact, versatile, and powerful light engine.

In this blog, we’ll explore the features and benefits of Innovative Lighting’s latest C-5 compliant NAV-Docking Light, designed to meet and exceed modern safety standards while offering unmatched flexibility and durability.

Sparking the Idea: the NAV-Docking Lights

Traditionally, the marine industry has struggled with separate systems for navigation and docking, leading to cluttered designs and compromised safety in challenging environments. Innovative Lighting’s NAV-Docking Light solves this problem by integrating both functionalities in a streamlined package, making it the go-to solution for anyone seeking a sleek, efficient, and highly functional lighting system.

The Evolution of NAV-Docking Lights

Innovative Lighting has been at the forefront of marine lighting solutions for decades, releasing its first light fixture in 1993. However, as the marine industry evolved, so did the standards for navigation lighting. The older lights were based on a simple linear circuit, robust for their time, and a staple in the market due to their cutting-edge technology.

With the update to the C-5 standard, the demands for sharper cutoff angles and maintaining full brightness to the edge of the cutoff became mandatory. These updated requirements ensure that boats are seen clearly, regardless of weather conditions, ensuring better safety for all vessels on the water.

However, meeting these standards presented challenges. Engineers initially believed that achieving these goals within the desired size, price, and flexibility constraints would be impossible. Through cross-collaboration with other departments within the company, specifically leveraging innovations from GENISYS, Innovative Lighting overcame these challenges, passing the ABYC C-5 testing and ensuring that the NAV-Docking Light met the new standard.

Key Features of the NAV-Docking Light

The new NAV-Docking Light is a compact, advanced LED light designed to meet the latest C-5 standard for marine navigation lights. This versatile light engine boasts several key features that set it apart from the competition:

  • Compact Size: Despite its small size, the light engine provides brighter and more focused illumination, ensuring maximum visibility.
  • Advanced Driver Technology: Developed through cross-collaboration with GENISYS, this cutting-edge driver technology achieves brightness levels and cutoff angles that other lights cannot match.
  • Integrated Docking Light: Offering enhanced visibility when docking, this feature is essential for safe mooring operations in low-light conditions.
  • Flexible Mounting Options: The light can be mounted on the deck, bow, canopy, or rub rail, making it adaptable to various boat designs.
  • Meets the C-5 Standard: The sharper cutoff ensures full brightness to the edge, improving the vessel’s visibility in any condition.
  • Durable Design: The NAV-Docking Light is completely sealed and designed to withstand harsh marine environments, ensuring long-lasting performance.

Check out the NAV-Docking Light Spec Sheet to see more.

Engineering Breakthroughs: The Advanced Technology Behind NAV-Docking Lights

The engineering challenges in developing Innovative Lighting’s NAV-Docking Lights were significant. One hurdle was meeting the new C-5 standard, which requires sharper light cutoffs and full brightness right to the edges. The engineers had to overcome significant technical challenges, almost “breaking the laws of physics,” as Scott Drobny, Innovative Lighting’s National Sales Manager, joked, “to create such precision in such a small light. It’s like trying to maintain a sharp shadow close to a light source, which becomes increasingly difficult with proximity.” Utilizing team members’ past experiences in other sensory industries, the team utilized a “horn” commonly used in loud-speakers, to shape the light and meet the cutoff requirements. These advancements led to addition of another patent to the company’s vast intellectual property portfolio. On top of achieving this sharp cutoff, they managed to integrate a docking light for better visibility when approaching docks at night, all within a small, compact unit.

Another challenge was developing a versatile light engine that could be universally mounted on various boat types. Traditionally, different lights were needed for different areas, but this light can be mounted in multiple configurations—from deck mounts, to rub rails and more.

Moreover, the team designed it to be easily customizable, so boat manufacturers can utilize their own housings, allowing the light to fit their brand aesthetic without re-engineering the core light engine. Combined with the advanced driver technology, this flexibility makes the NAV-Docking Light a breakthrough, combining advanced technology, versatility, and precision..

In addition, the integrated circuit and heat protection ensures longevity, reducing the need for maintenance and replacement. The NAV-Docking Light has been rigorously tested by third-party labs for vibration, shock, dry heat, low temperature, and solar radiation resistance. It passed all tests, meeting the C-5 standard and achieving the desired “type accepted” status with the ABYC.

NAV-Docking Lights Solve Multiple Challenges for Boat Builders and Wholesalers

The NAV-Docking Light has been strategically designed to fit a unique market niche. For boatbuilders, it provides a sleek, customizable solution that can be adapted to any design, eliminating the need to settle for off-the-shelf products. This light fits seamlessly into any boat aesthetic, giving builders the freedom to create a unified look across their designs.

For wholesalers, the NAV-Docking Light offers a modern solution to replace outdated systems that no longer meet current standards. This product provides a competitive edge in the market by offering unmatched flexibility in mounting options and customizable appearance.

Why 'Made in Iowa' Matters for Innovative Lighting's Custom LED Solutions

By Harry Aller, Innovative Lighting President

Since its founding in 1993 by Jerry Handsaker, Innovative Lighting has grown from a humble beginning into a powerhouse of innovation in the LED lighting industry. Based in the heart of Iowa, our company has expanded from a single product to thousands, each tailored to meet the unique needs of our customers. Innovative Lighting’s primary product lines—MarineTruck & TrailerEcoBrite and GENISYS—are a testament to our commitment to quality and innovation.

One of the critical factors driving our success is the “Made in Iowa” label. This designation is more than just a point of pride—it’s a mark of customization, quality, product knowledge, reliable delivery times, and the steadfast Midwest ethic. Here is why “Made in Iowa” is so important for Innovative Lighting and our customers.

Innovative Lighting Made in Iowa

Why "Made in Iowa" Matters

Customization

At Innovative Lighting, our ability to pivot and create custom solutions sets us apart. Our local talent and in-house capabilities enable us to adapt quickly to market changes and customer needs. In an example of local operational excellence, Innovative recently had a large OEM Customer request a specific RGBW, 5-wire product. Since we have a local team, we could start ideating immediately. Within three weeks, Innovative delivered a high-quality prototype and began production just two weeks after approval. In contrast, most companies relying on offshore manufacturing and engineering may take three to four months to achieve the same results.

Quality

Our commitment to high-quality, innovative products is strengthened by our control over the entire production process. Local oversight allows for detailed quality checks, ensuring top-notch products that our customers can rely on. Furthermore, consumers increasingly value domestically made products for their reliability, quality, and environmental benefits. By reducing transportation needs, we also lower our carbon footprint, making our products more environmentally friendly.

Turnaround Times

Localized operations enable us to prototype and produce quickly, minimizing risks from global events or geopolitical tensions. Our independence from international supply chains ensures continuity and reduces vulnerability to disruptions. During the global supply chain crises of 2021-2022, many competitors struggled with delivery delays, quality issues, and increased costs. While we were not immune to some raw materials challenges, our in-house manufacturing control allowed us to maintain high standards and on-time delivery rates, even for high-volume products during the height of supply chain instability.

Today, many companies are celebrating their return to US operations, but we are proud that we never left. Reshoring is a hot topic because the pandemic supply chain challenges forced companies to reckon with what we already knew from our own tests using international manufacturers: the more you outsource your operations, the less control you have.

By maintaining our operations in Iowa, we have always had the advantage of direct oversight and control, ensuring that our products meet the highest standards and are delivered promptly. This consistency and reliability sets Innovative Lighting apart in the industry.

Product Knowledge

Our in-house team possesses a deep understanding of each product component and design. This expertise enhances our customer service, as knowledgeable staff can directly communicate with designers, engineers, and customers. We cater to specific needs, such as mounting requirements, light color, material color, and voltage range, ensuring that our products meet precise specifications.

Midwest Work Ethic

Our company culture emphasizes hard work, reliability, and integrity—values deeply rooted in the Midwest work ethic. Time and again our customers share that they are impressed by our excellent service, quick communications, and quality of our products. The persistence and innovation that characterize our founder’s farming roots are mirrored in our approach to LED lighting. Our team members, many with long tenures at Innovative Lighting, embody these values, contributing to our low turnover rate and consistent service excellence to our customers.
